What is the difference between the CPM and CPMM exam?
All candidates receive the same exam. The exam is scored separately for the product management portion and the product marketing portion. The final score on each will determine which designation the candidate is qualified to receive. In exceptional cases, individuals may achieve a passing score on both parts of the exam and are eligible for the dual CPM/CPMM credential.
What should I do to prepare for the exam?
The AIPMM holds 1 ½ day Educational Workshops in conjunction with the Certification Exam. These workshops, although not mandatory, are highly recommended review sessions for the exam. The AIPMM also conducts certification review webinars. Go to http://www.aipmm.com/certification for the schedule of Educational Workshops and webinars. Also several resource texts can be used to prepare for the exam. These include: Product Management Handbook and Product Management Field Guide by Linda Gorchels and Software Product Management by Alyssa Dvers. In addition, the AIPMM has partnered with several partners to cover a broad range of material included in the Certification Exam.
Who can apply to take the certification exam?
Any individual with working experience in the product management, product marketing management or brand management field - from any industry.
Where and when can I take the certification exam?
The AIPMM holds quarterly Educational Workshops and Certification Exams around the country. Go to http://www.aipmm.com to find out when and where the next Workshop and Exam will be held.
When and how will I find out if I've passed?
Results are usually available within 3 weeks after the exam date. You will receive an email notification of your results as well as a printed certificate, if you passed the exam.
What happens if I don't pass the exam?
In order to receive your certification you must achieve an overall score of 74%. If you did not score at that level or above you must re-take the exam.
It is highly recommended you attend the 1 ½ day Educational Workshop that precedes the Certification Exam. Go to http://www.aipmm.com to find out when the next Workshop and Exam will be held.
How can I show my designation as a CPM or CPMM?
Upon notification of passing the exam, you will be entered into the AIPMM certification database. You can then add the words and/or initials CPM or CPMM (depending on your credential) to your business cards, letterhead or other company material as you wish. Upon your request, we can verify your certification with prospective employers, clients, etc.
Are there different exams for different industries? If I am a software product manager, do I take the same exam as a consumer brand manager?
All candidates take the same exam. The questions are not industry based. The questions test the candidate's knowledge of the theory and best practices within the field of product or marketing management. The exam is not based on any particular methodology. It crosses industry barriers as it focuses on strategies and skills considered best practices throughout many disciplines. |
